Food Inc. The Movie.

Food Inc. the movie debuts this weekend in select locations. It has been dubbed as the “Inconvenient Truth” of the food industry. I personally hope it changes some things. As a former professional Chef I know that food here in the U.S. is shipped thousands of miles, preserved, irradiated, pasteurized and genetically modified beyond the average persons imagination. If people knew what is actually done to their food I doubt most people would want to eat it.

But that’s what we demand. We don’t demand fresh, we don’t demand natural products or chemical free products, we don’t demand food that actually taste good just food that is convenient, that we can but in the big bx store and we can buy once a week and cook in the microwave.

I am far from being “Euro” but I am so envious of the way Europeans shop, dine, grown, produce, care for, cook and generally respect food. I am envious of the markets they have and can stop buy on the way home from work and decide what you want to cook for dinner.

Can we get there? Yes we can, but we have to be willing to do a few things like pay a little more for food, demand natural chemical free foods, shop locally and have a general respect for food.

I hope Food Inc. can make a difference. Do you?

  1. I attended a pre-screening of Food, Inc. last week. Kenner and Schlosser were there for a Q and A. A lot of compelling information is presented in the film, and I hope a lot of people go to see it and discuss it. Mostly, I hope some changes start happening because of it!

Lisa, Thanks for commenting. Lucky you for attending the pre-screen, me I have to wait until July until it comes up here to NH….

Hey, nice post, really well written. You should blog more about this. I’ll certainly be subscribing.

  4. I agree, we don’t demand enough natural products. I didn’t realize how much junk was in food until I was pregnant for the first time last year and I went on this super healthy diet. One of my pregnancy books led me to a website and I just about died after reading about all the chemicals and preservatives in our food. Since then, we only eat organic, all natural products. Granted it’s expensive, but worth it.

Thanks for sharing. I’m looking forward to the documentary as well.

As a professional chef myself, I couldn’t agree with you more about what the average diner thinks is in their food, and what actually is. I also agree with the envy you feel towards the European way of “grocery” shopping. I myself have decided to team up with the organic farmers in my area. When I heard a woman ask the intern at my local farmstand, of beets with tops, “How do you cook these? Is this the same thing in the can?”, I realized that as a chef I think we need to do more than shop at Farmer’s Markets. Education & awareness is critical to this change most of us are striving for.
